Former North Atlantic Alliance spokeswoman, during the shelling of the Serbian Army during the war in Kosovo, Jamie Shea has said Vladimir Putin's military aggression in Ukraine has changed things.
Shea during an interview with Croatian media has stressed that, Serbia's President Alexader Vuciq must choose between two chairs, alluding to between the West and Russia.
Serbia has strong economic ties with the European Union, while Russia has a long history based on the idea of panslavism. Putin's conquest in Ukraine has changed things. Vuciq must understand that the West and Russia will become increasingly remote because of the war in Ukraine and that it will no longer be possible to sit on two” chairs, Shea stressed.
According to him, it is for Vuciqi to decide on Serbia's European path.
“Vucciq reportedly said he would do so in the next six weeks. It's up to him to decide. I think Serbia must decide for the EU, which offers a better economic future and democratic development”, it has ended.
Days ago, also Bundestag deputy Josip Juratovic, who is also chairman of the Commission for the Western Balkans, has said Serbia can no longer sit in two chairs.
Juratovic has said Russia is exploiting uncertainty in the Western Balkans in its favour.
I think Serbia should finally decide which side it is on. Serbia can no longer sit in two chairs. After all, it's not only in Germany's interest, I think Putin himself works that way and I think he can quote Churchill, who once said it's not a problem to be neutral, it's important that you be neutral on the right side<1>, Juratovic said.
