Serbia joined 141 states that voted at the General Assembly of the United Nations, to condemn the invasion of Ukraine “in the harshest possible form”. Three days ago, Serbia was on a list of Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea, failing to join sanctions against Russia, while today it has made a significant breakthrough, crossing and other countries that abstained.
Clearly, the decision has been taken under the relentless pressure of Western diplomacy. What was noted for the past two days was that even the highest officials of the European Union, but also of the United States of America, were not literally condemning Serbia's reluctance to join the West against Russia.
As they spoke in a wild tone to Belarus and even to those who abstained, they spared in their vocabulary the attack on Serbia. And that was making everyone nervous.
The first signs of the quake were seen when Aleksandar Vucic himself began making the victim, making statements of type “for three days I'm gray for ten years”, as if to warn domestic opinion in Serbia, which is over 70 per cent with Russia, that it was under a lot of pressure.
The Western strategy has apparently been to fight to the end to take Serbia on their side, not to leave Russia hostage.
The Western press, meanwhile, seriously aggressive Belgrade, making it clear that the permanent closure of doors in the EU and the region, making it a fact of blocking any regional or European initiative to co-operate with Serbia. Another factor that has affected are Aleksandar Vucic's bad personal reports with Putin. The head of the Kremlin has consistently seen it as a “servil” of the West and a leader who could not believe partnership with Russia.
The only thing that kept Belgrade officially linked to Russia is the majority of Serbs who are really with Russia. And this is a problem that they will face in the coming days and in the near elections, which, unfortunately, is not that they develop into a very competitive environment. This is not good news for Kosovo and Albanians, as a pro-Russian Belgrade at the moment was truly a disgrace to the Balkans, but a fate for Kosovo. Vucic and Serbia as a whole are dangerous for Kosovo as pro-Western, not as Russian pro. But on the other hand, this is a positive signal for the region, as it curbs Russian signals for unrest in the Balkans, especially in Bosnia and Dodik.
It is clear that Aleksandar Vucic has made a difficult choice and is not one of the choices his people enjoy, but it is in fact one that makes choices good for his people. It seems to be a decision made against Putin with soul-to-heart”, joining the West and the whole world against Putin. And it's not just Serbia. Along with Serbia, Putin today has lost China. It's the beginning of a cap. The only good news here is that Serbia has understood who wins this battle. And when they realize who wins the battle, they've given evidence that the owner of the house, not Putin. Milosevic is probably spinning where he is.
