Pan-European line “10”, which starts from Salzburg, and runs through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia, ends in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Kosovo's citizens are the only ones in the region who use the train at least as a means of transportation, which is also due to the fact that the railway network does not cover the whole state, but also because of the poor network.
For the railway network to be more tempting, the European Union has envisioned a considerable help in rehabilitateing “Line 10 railway”, which runs through the tow connects seven states, including the Republic of Kosovo.
This project, stemming from the Berlin agenda, from the meeting of Western Balkan states led by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was held in 2014 in Berlin, will cost over 160m euros only for the line passing through Kosovo.
The rehabilitation of the railway network within Kosovo is 148km, and is divided into three phases: The first phase, which began from Elez's Hani Fushesh Kosovo, the second phase Fushe Kosova Kosova Mitrovica South, and the third phase is from South Mitrovica to Leshak, on the border with Serbia. This line will then be linked to the ten railway corridor linking Kosovo with the Western Balkans and the Trans-European Transport Network.
It is of utmost importance that loans borrowed from the BERZH and the EUI are long-term returns loans (for which the Government of the Republic of Kosovo is guaranteed), while the return interest is small. It is noteworthy that half the value of investments for this major project is provided in the form of grants from EU funds through the WBIF mechanism.
During 2021 he worked on the rehabilitation of the first phase of the 10th Iron Line (Kosovo Mountain of Elez), but because of delays this project is expected to take place by the end of 2022.
The start of rehabilitation and modernisation of the second phase of the 10th Line of Railways (Kosovo Fushe Mitrovica) The selection procedure of the top company has been delayed, but by December 2021 the contract has been signed, while publicised last week, writes Periscope.
While, according to “reports Infracos”, the beginning of the Projectisan technical detail for the third phase (Mitrovica ) Leshak) LPF 9 and Consortium H ILL International in November 2021 has begun implementing draft design detail technical for the third phase (Mitrovica ʹ Leshak border with Serbia). The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
The re-opening of the northern part of the 10 railway line from Mitrovica to the border with Serbia, it is known that since March 03th 2008, Serb parallel forces in northern Kosovo assisted by Serbia's Railways have occupied the northern part of the 10th Railway Line, thus enabling INFRACOS to access that part of the railway. Infrakos had hoped that during the year 2021, there would be talks between Kosovo and Serbia on the issue, but this did not happen, which has not, as a result, become a realisation of that goal. / P ERISCOPI/
