Adie Timmmermans met Chita, a 38-year-old male chimpanzee every month, for four years. Her presence and actions influenced Chita to distance herself from other monkeys, zoo officials say.
Other chimpanzees had Chita removed from their group, so he was alone in the garden except for moments when there were visitors, such as Addie. Adie rejected the decision, saying that “I love that animal and he loves me, I have nothing else”. She expressed frustration at the fact that she is the only one forbidden to enter the Antwerp Zoo, while other visitors can come whenever they want to and meet the chimpanzees freely.
Despite the zoo decision, garden keepers fear that Chita will never be able to integrate well with other chimpanzees.
In 2014, the director of the Center for Monkey Research and Preservation, Stephen Ross and Hani Freedman, conducted a study that revealed that chimpanzees separated from their mothers at a young age and raised mainly by humans displayed “social management” with other chimpanzees.
