Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan has called on other European countries to assume responsibility for Afghans fleeing the Taliban, warning that Turkey has no obligation to be “po of refugees in Europe”.
“Europe, which has become the attraction center for millions, cannot stay out of this problem by closing its borders just to protect the welfare of its citizens. With that stance, Europe is turning its back on human values”, Erdogan said at a television press conference, the ten reports.
He said about half of the irregular “migrants that Turkey has registered in the past three years are from Afghanistan.
Turkey expects about five million foreign citizens, including 3.6 million Syrians and 300 thousand Afghans, Erdogan said.
President said “if necessary” Turkey will be open for a meeting with the “government that will be formed by the Taliban”.
Otherwise, about 500 Turkish citizens were evacuated from Afghanistan recently, and about 300 others still trapped there will return home soon. /Telegraphy/
