The accident reportedly involved a truck that crashed into a civilian police vehicle to which Lars Wilkes and his police protection were traveling.
Police have confirmed that Wilkes, 75, was traveling in the car with two police officers, who also died after the truck crash.
Wilkes was largely unknown outside Sweden before his cartoon for the prophet Muhammad.
