Trump announces candidate name for Supreme Court on Saturday

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he plans to announce on Saturday the name of the candidate he will propose to replace High Court member Ruth Bader Ginsburg after her death Friday. The president's announcement comes as a weighing lawmaker said the Senate Republicans [...]

The president's announcement comes as a weighing lawmaker said the Senate republics have enough votes to approve Trump's selection ahead of the November 3rd presidential elections.

In a Twitter post, Mr. Trump also wrote that he will make the announcement from the White House.

The president has already announced that he will choose candidacy among a list of five conservative women he is praising. According to reports Trump met with one of them Monday, appeals court judge Amy Coney Barrett.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Joe Biden, Mr. Trump's Democrat rival for the November 3rd election, has called for the future president to choose the candidate for the Supreme Court after his inauguration in January.

But the republics are seeking to benefit from the current majority enjoyed in the Senate, out of 53 countries compared to 47 who have Democrats. The approval of a third conservative candidate by Mr. Trump for the Supreme Court would make the court's ideological balance more likely than its conservative edge, from 5 to 4 currently to 6 to 3. The Senate has previously approved two more names for the Supreme Court proposed by President Trump, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

The republican senator of South Carolina, who in the quality of Senate Judiciary Commission chairman, will monitor sessions to confirm the candidacy for the Supreme Court, told Fox News television network late Monday evening that the Republicans have enough votes to approve the name the president will choose.

“Candidate will be backed by any republic at the Jurydic Commission”, Mr. Graham said. “We have the votes to confirm it in the Senate before elections, and this is happening”, he added.

Two Republican senators, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, have announced they will vote against Mr. Trump's appointment before the elections, when fewer than 40 days remain compared to the 70 or more that the Senate has usually needed to review and approve the candidacy for a seat in the Supreme Court during past administrations. But no other Republican senator has joined them in trying to delay the candidacy review after the elections.

Senator Mitt Romney, a frequent critic of Mr. Trump, was the last to express his approval to move ahead with the process.

“ “If the candidate arrives for the vote Senate, I intend to vote based on his” qualifications, he added.

In 2016 the Senate controlled by the Republicans blocked nine months before the presidential elections, the review of the final candidate for the Supreme Court proposed by President Barack Obama, Merrick Garland.

But Mr. Romney along with several other republics say the fact that the party controls both the White House and the Senate makes the current war for a name for the Supreme Court different than four years ago.

The historical claim of an election year is that the Senate does not generally confirm the nomination of an opposing party, but confirms a nominated to its”, Romney said.

Mr. Romney's position does not mean that Mr. Trump's candidate will definitely have the votes to pass, but that Mr. Graham, the majority leader in the Senate Mitch McConnell and other Republicans can push ahead with the process without delay.

Two other Republican senators, thought to be opposed to a vote before elections for Supreme Court member Cory Gardner and Chuck Grazley, also said on Monday they are not against moving forward in meeting the created vaccine.

The Democrats, who enjoy the minority in the Senate, are mainly powerless to prevent the candidate review that Mr. Trump will propose. But so far they have tried to put Republicans in difficult positions, criticising them for blocking Mr Obama's candidacy during another election year.

Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer said on Monday that the upcoming crash over confirmation could lead to the “the end of this large institution”.

“If a majority in the Senate over six years steals two places in the Supreme Court using fully contradictory reasonings, how can we expect to trust the other side again?”, he said. “

In addition to considering 48-year-old Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a former justice professor at Notre Dame University and conservative activists who are seen as favourite to be appointed, Mr. Trump is also considering the names of three other judges of the Appeals Courts.

Barbara Lagoa, 52, daughter of a Cuban refugee who fled the island after Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959, is also seen as a potential candidate. Under consideration are Judges Allison Jones Russian and Joan Larsen, along with White House deputy Kate Todd. /voa
