The EU Council of Ministers for European Affairs gave the Po today for the opening of EU negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
“Very pleased that EU member states reached a political agreement today to open membership talks with Albania and Northern Macedonia. I sincerely wish both countries. This is a message from the Western Balkans: Your future is in the EU”, Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhely announced on Twitter.
German Minister of Europe Michael Roth, (SPD) said in Berlin before the media video conference how important this decision is: the Western Balkans is not a remote region, but is the inner courtyard of the European Union. It is in our common interest that this region finds lasting peace, peace, stability and judicial state. And I am very happy that we today have the opportunity to set a clear signal that the EU keeps its promises and that the prospect of Balkan membership applies to all Western Balkan countries”, German Minister for Europe Michael Roth said.
Michael Roth has been among the most committed supporters to opening negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia and fought for the EU member states' obedience even in October, when the decision was postponed with France's veto. After modification of the European Commission's membership criteria, France has given up the blockade.
“Good news in these dark times: finally green light at today's Council of Ministers for Europe for the opening of talks #EU membership with our friends from #North Macedonia + #Albania. Victory for the EU and #Western Balkans. Congratulations to Tirana + Skopje is deserved. ”
