University of New York professor Alon Ben-Meir said Serbia should accept the fact that Kosovo is independent, and also, Kosovo should lift the tax on Serbian goods.
Meir a researcher at the Center for Global Affairs in New York told the Voice of America that Serbia must reach a simple conclusion, base “Kosovo is a fact of life, is an independent country”.
“E have recognised nearly 100 countries. About 15 countries have withdrawn recognition because of Serbia's pressure. Serbia should end this campaign. Other way. Kosovo must lift the 100 per cent fee on Serbia's imports. The resumption of flights carried out with support from the United States is a good start. This is the view Kosovo must have”, Meir said.
He also said both sides should take these steps, recognizing the reality.
“are neighbours, should take and give each other. They must admit that some realities on the ground that they cannot change. And when they get to that point, especially Serbia, I think there will be progress”, Meir said away.
Meir has also spoken of the fact that Kosovo is experiencing even a political impasse, as there is still no agreement for the government.
I think it's a bad thing. The people voted for what they wanted - a clean government that would do things differently. And it's been three to four months and there's still no government. It's just unacceptable. They have to decide what to do. And the discussions between the two sides are not even about politics, they're more about personality issues and it's pathetic. They should put personal differences aside. I think that the people of Kosovo want to see an end to this deadlock, because they want to continue their lives, they want a functional government, a clean government, and it's the right of citizens to ask for it, and if they don't, they have to announce new elections”, Meir said.
Alon Ben-Meir said he thinks it's important that the United States continue their engagement.
I don't want to underestimate what the EU is doing, and it has to do more than the United States, but American efforts are important. They view America as the greatest power and are closer to it than to Europe. America must continue to play this role to advance its interests, as well as relations between the United States and the Balkans as a whole from its security perspective”, Meir concluded.
