Europe is no longer looking east. The EU enlargement process towards the Balkans appears to be undergoing a blow. The Albanian prime minister, Edi Rama, emphasises this in an interview for the pan-European intelligence network, Euronews, expressing concern about the precedent North Macedonia is experiencing compared to his country for membership negotiations, a fact that, according to him, could destabilise the entire region.
” We need to take into account the fact that more and more often the crucial process of the Council is not based on what we do, for what countries like ours do, but on the domestic situation or the internal political dynamic of different member states”, Rama said.
According to the results of a European Council investigation, the EU's public opinion is becoming more and more controversial in the face of new countries pending membership. Fear of migration has increased with the involvement of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia, but further public opinion still has many obstacles Albania must overcome for membership in the European Union.
There are many areas for which Albanian institutions in the complex must continue to work, the European Union's ambassador to Tirana points out. The daily fight against corruption, the fight against organised crime and drug trafficking that is changing tactics.
However, EU membership is Albania's target”, as the prime minister himself explains.
Europe's” for us is not just a bureaucratic process, a group of developed countries in which we dream to get involved, for us is what was for the Founding Fathers that created it as a peace and co-operation project”, Prime Minister Rama stressed.
