Kosovo is heading towards new early parliamentary elections, following the parliament's distribution, which followed Prime Minister Haradinaj's resignation several weeks ago.
The elections were provoked by Prime Minister Haradinaj in hopes that the populist climate created after the tax was imposed on Serbia and its heroisation following the call to The Hague could help his party grow in early elections.
But beyond this populist account, Kosovo has a fragmented political spectrum, ideological and historical parties that are entering the elections, avoiding the main challenge the newest European state has on its way to recognition, which is the agreement with Serbia.
The reasons why the country is going to the polls are related to the Agreement with Serbia and President Thaci's failed attempt to lead the negotiation process on an eyeline between Washington, Brussels and Pristina and Belgrade alone.
His opponent Ramush Haradinaj, powerless to counter the West directly for the deal, threw the process of talks into the air, establishing the tax with Serbia and thus blocking unconditional talks.
New elections, despite internal problems, must produce a majority that has the courage to take over talks with Serbia or their refusal. I know it's a bad time to mention at the start of the election campaign talks with Serbia, but in the final, the majority that will come out of the election will face this topic.
In a normal country with political maturity, before entering the campaign, parties could make a National Pact, regarding talks with Serbia, so that it would not become the subject of the electoral campaign, but remain a consensual issue, all parties tasked with bringing that process forward.
This could be a political party table, a formal political agreement, uncoordinated and based on clear principles not to violate Kosovo's independence, or other forms. But this is simply a dream for Kosovo and Albanians as a whole.
It doesn't happen and it doesn't happen, as in Albania, the consortium for European integration. Whenever the date approaches, Berisha and Meta ready the Molotovs or tapes purchased by their prosecutors.
In its absence, the debate on the Agreement with Serbia should at least become open, with parties clearly defined about it and establish alliances based on those positions. So at least we know who wins.
The elections were provoked precisely by the negotiations process with Serbia and their political product will be either a majority for the agreement or a majority against it. But it should be known in the campaign, otherwise we will hear patriots speaking against Serbia in campaigning and shopping, who will sell and buy deputies for tenders after the campaign.
When the elections are over and the new government is formed -- the US and the EU -- will again decide on the government's table, the issue of agreement with Serbia. For no one to be forced to lie in the campaign or after it, it is good for the issue to be debated to clarify its attitude toward it.
As the new majority should not be strengthened on the basis of tenders or jobs as deputy minister, but on the basis of positions on a vital issue for Kosovo's future. Only thus can populist speculation be avoided by those who rule as thieves and want to take power as patriots. /Theme/
