EU policy is based on fair and rigorous conditioning to ensure that reforms, in countries aspiring to be part of the European Union, are stable and irreversible.
But there are also some steps in particular, regarding fighting corruption and organised crime, which Albania still needs to meet before meeting the criteria set by the Council in June 2019, before negotiations for EU accession open.
The Netherlands Parliament, on the 12th of June, adopted a motion urging the government not to accept opening negotiations with Albania. A decision by the Council of General Affairs, on 18 June, to open accession negotiations would be early.
We encourage Albania's government to continue on the road it has started. We are clear how difficult the accession process is and we will continue to support Albania in its reforms as much as we can, especially in the area of rule of laws”, the Embassy's announcement said. /top Channel/
