Moghrin: The discrimination against LGBTI persons, violation of human rights

On the International Day of Homophobia, Transphobia and Biophobic, senior representative Federica Mogherin, on behalf of the European Union, issued a press release that reiterates the EU's firm commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of lesbians, homosexuals, bisexualsexuals, transgiand intersexualsuals. “A keeps the world cultural, traditional or [...]

The “A maintains the world's cultural, traditional, or religious values continue to be used to justify persecution, discrimination, harassment and severe mistreatment against persons LGBTI, often involving hate crimes and extreme forms of violence, including torture and murder”, the statement said.

According to her, sexual orientation laws continue to criminalise sexual acts within the same gender in 72 countries, while in other countries the laws do not provide the proper level of protection by allowing various forms of discrimination to occur on daily grounds in all areas of life of LGBTI.

“The EU strongly reaffirms that discrimination against persons LGBTI undermines the most fundamental principles of human rights involved in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The EU continues its fight against impunity for acts of discrimination and violence against LGBTI persons within and outside its territory”, Mogher's statement follows.

Since 2016, the European Union has supported 16 projects implemented by civil society organisations in Asia, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe, worth 5.2m euros. In 2018, The EU launched a separate call for proposals worth 10m euros to support LGBTI organisations worldwide. Furthermore, the recent adoption of the EU's Human Rights Guides for Disdiscrimination reinforces existing EU guidelines to promote and protect the joy of all human rights by LGBTI persons.

The countless LGBI rights defenders working to challenge injustice and give a voice to those suffering from oppression and discrimination often face attacks in Europe and many parts of the world. That is why the EU from November 2018, through the Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, supports LGBI human rights advocates and their active organisations in areas where LGBTI face the greatest risk of discrimination”, the statement said.

Mogherin, on behalf of the European Union, says he will continue to support the basic work of these lawyers and will not stop until all LGBTI can live freely and safely.
