Kosovo with biggest decline in EU asylum seekers region

According to the institute, Asylum is the form of international protection provided by a state on its territory.
“Azili is offered to a person who is unable to seek protection in his country of citizenship and/or residence, in particular because of fears of persecution for ethnic causes, religion, nationality, membership in a certain social group or political opinion. Under the EU until 2012, there has been gradual increase in the number of asylum applications. Since 2013, the number of asylum seekers increased at an exponential rate, marking 431 thousand applications in 2013, 627 thousand in 2014, and about 1.3 million in 2015 and 2016. In 2018, 638 thousand asylum seekers applied for international protection in the EU member states. That was 10% less than in 2017 (712 000) and a little over half of the asylum seekers registered in 2016 when some 1.3 million asylum seekers were registered. The number of asylum seekers in 2018 is comparable to the level recorded in 2014. As for the Western Balkan countries, the asylum seekers' record was marked in 2015 with a total of 199,365 asylum seekers, of whom 172,225 were asylum seekers for the first time. In 2015, Kosovo and Albania were the largest countries of asylum seekers from the Balkans with 72,480 and 67,950 asylum seekers, of them 66,885, and 66,145 were asylum seekers for the first time”, the communiques said.
The EPIK Institute says that by 2015, the number of asylum seekers from the Western Balkans has fallen steadily to the lowest level marked in 2018 of 40,420 asylum seekers, of which 31,885 were asylum seekers for the first time.
“in 2018, Albania and Serbia were the largest countries of asylum seekers from the Balkans with 21,915, and 6,145 asylum seekers, of them 19,045, respectively, were asylum seekers for the first time. In this direction, from all Western Balkan countries, Kosovo has seen the largest decline in asylum seekers from 72,480 in 2015, of which 66,885 were asylum seekers for the first time, to 4,970 in 2018, out of which 3,300 were asylum seekers for the first time, 93%-18>, said the communique.
