The AP commemorates that these elections are a key test for the popularity of Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party at the time of the sharp economic downturn in the country.
The new mayors for 30 cities and 51 provincial capitals, as well as the heads of 922 districts in Turkey and the deputies of local congregations, will be appointed in this election.
In past local elections in 2014, Erdogan's party won almost 43 per cent of the vote and held power in Istanbul and the capital Ankara.
The Turkish president's local elections named it “a key support point for democracy” and added that his party's success would add a “to a large” presidential administration.
