Until some of China's cities have reportedly seen remarkable improvement in air quality.
The world's most polluted city according to this report by Greenpeace and AirVisual is Gurugram, located on the outskirts of the Indian capital, New Dahli. The average air quality index in this city was 135.8 during the 2018 R.C. three times the level the U.S. Environment Protection Agency considers healthy.
According to the report, air pollution during 2019 will cause some 7 million premature deaths and will have great economic impact.
The most disturbing air pollution problem is in South Asia. 18 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are located in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Climate change “is significantly making the effects of air pollution worse by changing weather conditions and strengthening fires involving forests” the report says.
The latest report finds that out of the three thousand cities that have been included in the report, 64 have exceeded the normal values set forth by the World Health Organization.
Polluted air contains chemicals such as sulphats, nitrates, and black carbon, which cause lung and heart disease. They may even cause cancer.
