The administration of the American president, Donald Trump, repeatedly states that the failure of the last decades to have a foreign policy with North Korea meant that there was no other choice but to start everything from the cool, personal, and <x0-second-sized” of Mr. Trump.
But the fact is that Trump's approach has now failed, and the genus is rubbing his hands for the benefit he's had. The failure of the last summit in Vietnam, the US-North Coast in Hanoi, is a victory for North Korean leader Kim Jong.
Trump and his officials already named the result “a draw of”, stating that North Korea has promised to continue preventing tests, and claiming that undefined progress has been made in the talks, promising in the end that negotiations will continue.
But, by ensuring an extension of the process, and by not releasing any data on deregulation, Kim can continue to improve his country's nuclear and missile capabilities, benefit from an ever-inflammatory regime of sanctions, and benefit from its established status as a new and respected member of the international community.
The real question is, did Kim plan for things? Did he seduce Trump to go to Hanoi, just to say he knew, he couldn't agree with US demands? There is much evidence that this is what happened. We know a lot after Trump himself explained it at his media conference before going home.
He said Kim was offered to destroy the nuclear facility in Jongbon, but only in exchange for the full easing of sanctions. “They were willing to dismantle a large portion of the plants we wanted, but we couldn't give up all the sanctions we made about so”- Trump said.
Trump is correct; it would be a terrible deal. Jongbon, represents only a small, outdated piece of Kim's nuclear infrastructure. But Trump cannot pretend to be surprised by that poor offer. CNN reported that senior Trump officials warned him of what would happen.
Special Envoy Stephen Biegun had negotiated for weeks with his North Korean counterparts, but he could not have North Koreans do more, even sign a declaration on what had been discussed. The concept that Trump, though charismatic, could overcome this gap in just a few meetings was never reliable.
Contrary to Trump, North Korea's foreign minister said Kim had only demanded the partial removal of sanctions for closing the facility in Jongbon.
But that too would be a bad deal, at least according to Mung Cung, adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae. Speaking in Washington last week, he said, this “is a good deal for North Korea, and a bad deal for the United States”.
No one is pushing more than the parties for an agreement between the US and North Korea than the South Korean government. If the U.S. didn't know he couldn't accept the deal Kim proposed, Kim certainly knew that. He's an evil person, but not a fool.
Likely, Kim's offer was a poisoned candy, which simply meant enough flexibility to bring Trump to Hanoi, but to ensure that negotiations fail. Trump went straight into Kim's trap, and it seems you still don't understand that.
Furthermore, Trump made two big mistakes. He declined to say that the purpose of the negotiations was the complete deregulation of North Korea. I don't want to put myself in that position, from the point of view of negotiations” This rejects everything his officials continue to say, and which in fact weakens his negotiating position.
Meanwhile, the American president allowed Kim to withdraw from the request for an investigation into the case of Otto Wormbyer, an American student imprisoned for several weeks in the Communist country, and who died several days after returning to the United States from North Korea. Acknowledging Kim's claim that she was unaware of Wormbyer's treatment, Trump again entrusted a dictator to his officials as he undermined every future attempt by the victim's family to make Kim responsible for their son's death.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeatedly confirmed that there was progress in the talks in Hanoi, but he provided zero information on what he was talking about. Within the administration, there is already a Plan B, in case Pompeo's attempt finally fails.
In addition, there is another solution to avoid going to war, a mixture of prevention, control, and return to maximum pressure co-ordinated with American allies. The latter is more likely, and the longer we wait to be played by gyan, the harder it will be.
As Democrat Senator Robert Menandez put it, Hanoi's summit showed us the amateur <x0-second with nuclear weapons on expiration, and the limits of television diplomacy”. Trump can see a personal benefit in prolonging his love relationship with Kim, also representing the world in this seismic effort.
But the bad smell of this summit's failure, and the dangers of threats from North Korea, are only increasing over time. No deal, it's better than a bad deal, but Trump's back in the game by Kim, and worse than before.
