Over 300 Kosovars suffer from cancer and are forced to teach

There are over 300 Kosovar teachers who currently suffer from various types of cancer and are being forced to continue teaching students, despite the severe health situation. All of this is happening, since those ministries of Education, Science and Technology (MASHT) have not yet offered them any solutions, leaving them without social and health assistance and without the possibility of early retirement. Cancer disease, or as the disease of the century, is taking on great expansion in our country as well.

Statistics show that in the last three years, there have been between 1500 and 1600 new cases reported. This disease is affecting various ages. And there are hundreds of teachers who currently suffer from various types of cancer. In the absence of any law that resolves such situations, those with a physical illness in order to provide for family well - being are trying to postpone employment until retirement.

Chairman of the United Education, Science and Culture Union ( The SBASK, Nundman Jasharaj, has told the Facts News Agency that despite many demands the country's institutions have not yet created adequate conditions for teachers affected by serious diseases.

Our data provides over 300 people affected by cancer. Dozens of times we like the SBASK have raised the issue for these people to raise their working conditions to retire so they can deal with the disease. But since no solution has been found, they are being forced to go to school just to support their family and to receive a salary of”, Jashar declared.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology ( So far, it seems that he has ignored this problem, since he has offered no choice, such as social and health assistance, or even early retirement. On this issue, FactePlus has also sent questions to MAST, but officials of this ministry have not answered questions. Meanwhile, top unionist N whereman Jasharaj says sick teachers should be provided 75 per cent of the salary and that new quarts should be taken instead.

We have given the idea that these teachers will retire 75 percent of their salary and instead engage intern teachers who would enjoy a modest income worth 25 percent of their wages and work instead of these seriously ill teachers. This idea has been theoretically supported by institutions, but that have not yet been supported virtually”, Jashari has said.

Meanwhile, Youth Qehaja from the Edgood Institute estimates it is a pity that teachers are forced to present themselves in school despite their state of health. According to him, bypassing this problem by institutions is unacceptable.

It's a pity that we're still in a situation when a serious illness teacher is forced to report to school despite their state of health. Crossing this problem by responsible institutions is unacceptable. Even if there may be budgetary implications it is injustice to teachers and students not to address the issue. I remind you that besides cancer-inflicted teachers, we also have teachers with other diseases”, the Qehaja said of FactePlus.

Currently in Kosovo, education workers, with an illness or accident, can receive only medical rest, as well as over the next three months, a 70 percent monthly income salary.

But, so far, the state has not offered proper social and health assistance for these cases, or even a dignified pension.
