Willy Bardon, 45, was under trial in connection with Elody Culick's death in 2002 when he took a pill and swallowed it before the court in Amiens during Friday.
He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for rape and kidnapping, writes Independent, translates Periscope.
According to Amiens prosecutor Alexander de Bosschere, tests showed Bardon had swallowed pesticides seconds after the verdict was handed over.
This came to the end of this high-profile court process, in one of the most serious cases in France, with DNA evidence leading police to Bardon.
However, Willy Bardon's condition had improved overnight.
