US company Boeing said it will temporarily stop the production of 737 aircraft Max from January.
Production has continued, although this model has not been in use for nine months because of two fatal accidents.
Over 300 people have lost their lives because one 737 Max has collapsed in Indonesia and the other in Ethiopia as a result of technical problems.
Boeing has hoped his planes will return to the sky by the end of this year, but American regulators have made it clear that they will not be certified for flight so soon.
Boeing is one of the largest American exporters.
The company said workers linked to 737 Max will not be affected, but that the production ban will likely affect suppliers and the economy in general.
The safe return of 737 Max to the service is our top priority”, Boeing said.
The production ban is also unlikely to affect passengers, as airlines have rented additional aircraft to replace 737 Max.
