From 1961 to 1989, people in East Germany have lived behind a wall as prisoners in the Soviet Union - controlled area that was established after World War II.
Escape from this area was almost impossible. In the so-called Democratic Republic of Germany (DDR), socialism was scheduled to be revived. But in the late 1980s, this experiment failed.
Below the Metro newspaper brings you six facts you know about the Union of Germany:
1. After the opening of the German border, in 1989 people from the East crossed into western parts to enjoy freedom.
2. To travel once without obstacles and to buy things that didn't exist in DDR.
3. Known clothing in the eastern parts disappeared, such as gray shoes, jackets from artificial material, or sport clothing made from parachutes. And the fridge changed. Very soon the apparent differences between the Germans (called in other parts of the country “Osis”) and the German West. But deep inside, there are still differences, prejudice remains.
4. “Mes “Osis” and “Wessis” (Germans in the West) still have very little friendship, very few contacts and connections. Far less than it would take”, Andreas Zick thinks. The other side is always to blame.
5. The second and third generation after the union is much more optimistic and sees more common values between East and West.
6. Meanwhile, a generation has grown that has never experienced the Berlin Wall and the division of Germany. But nobody hints until the differences in the heads of people from the East and West will be eliminated. Despite the differences, most people rejoice in Germany's union and democratisation.
