The leftist is expected to become Kosovo's newest prime minister has condemned the EU's decision to stop expanding and further in the Balkans, saying Western leaders had forgotten the lectures of two world wars and were already drawn to Fascism and populism.
Albin Kurti said the position could harm Kosovo's chances of reaching agreement with Serbia, which has refused to recognise Kosovo as an independent country since the end of the war in 1999, since Belgrade is less motivated to act without promise of EU membership.
France caused anxiety in the region at the EU summit last week following the blockade of Northern Macedonia and Albania to start EU entry talks, undermining Serbia's chances of entering the EU in the near future. French President Emmanuel Macron insisted that Europe likes to focus on internal reforms, Periscope follows.
“The EU has been formed as a response to fascism, but is already fleeing fearfully in front of populists and fascists,” Kurti told The Guardian.
Criticising Macroni, he said: “you cannot say first that you like internal reforms in the EU and then external enlargement because these go together. Europe is an important historical project that no human gives authorship, direction, or guidance. We have always seen that when (EU Commission outgoing president) Jean Klod Juncker [Jean-Claude Juncker] said there could not be any expansion in the next five years, the situation in the Balkans deteriorated.
“Yes, the EU is important for the Balkans, but the Balkans are also important for the EU. Berlin and Paris must know this well, and it's a pity, for all of us who have forgotten it. In the decades to come, historians will write that we did not have two world wars, but only one with two episodes, and it all started in Sarajevo. ”
Kurti's leftist nationalist movement, dubbed Vetevendosje, emerged as the first party after the October 6th snap elections. Jailed for 18 months by Serbian police during the peak of military tensions in Kosovo, the currently 44-year-old Kurti finds himself at the top of power, promising the end of two decades of neoliberalism in Kosovo.
He is recently in coalition talks with the centre-right LDK party, which came in second, to form a government that will have the minimum 30 per cent of women in its composition. Kurti envisions a coalition within a month and said his priority is job creation and justice, not reaching an agreement with Serbia.
After years of failed persecution against corruption, he promises an end to what he considers a state capture.
We were given to produce our Eliot Ness, and he must be the most famous person in our country,” Kurti added. We already have nearly 200 prosecutors, but some lack the knowledge of other bravery, while some have neither knowledge nor bravery. They must be released from the country. ”
But Kurti will be under international pressure to reach agreement with Serbia. The US has just appointed the special envoy to revive dialogue between the two countries.
Serbs fear Kurti's real political agenda is to enter any kind of confederation with Albania, further marginalising their community in northern Kosovo. /Periscope
