Russia believes that changing the name of the Republic of Macedonia in this way does not reflect the will of the people and that it cannot be accepted as a solution, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced regarding Macedonia's vote and constitutional changes. The Russian Foreign Ministry says the name issue of the Republic of Macedonia should be considered by the UN Security Council, in line with Resolution 845.
Russia's position on the name issue remains unchanged: Persistent solutions to the name can be only with the general support of the people and within the legal stands without outside intervention and condition. The change of the name of the Republic of Macedonia in this way does not reflect the will of the people and cannot be accepted as a solution. The name issue of the Republic of Macedonia should be considered by the UN Security Council in line with the point 3 of the 1993 Resolution 845 “, said the Russian MPJ response.
With Resolution 845 of June 18th 1993, the Security Council calls on the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Greece to find a quick solution to their disagreements under the auspices of the secretary general.
The Russian Foreign Ministry says constitutional changes are a continuation of the process of artificial change of name imposed on the outside in order for Skopje to enter NATO by force.
“The position of president of the Republic of Macedonia and the opinion of the majority of people who refuse the Prespa Agreement have been ignored”, Russia's Foreign Ministry say.
On January 11th, Macedonia's Assembly adopted constitutional changes stemming from the Prespa Agreement, including the amendment that differs from the Republic of Macedonia to the Republic of Northern Macedonia. Constitutional changes will come into force after the ratification of the Prespa Agreement in the Greek Parliament. /Alsat M
