United States President Donald Trump said the G7s, or group of more industrialized countries, must allow Russia to return to this elite group”, four years after its expulsion, due to the annexation of the Ukrainian Crime Peninsula.
He made these comments before the launch of the three-day G7 summit in Canada.
We meet without Russia. They should allow Russia, because we should have it at the negotiation table”, Trump said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded, saying Russia “is focusing its attention on other forms, outside G7”.
Canada said its opposition to Russia's re-admission “has not changed”, while an Italian Government spokesman said Rome agrees with Trump that Russia should be in the group.
The G7 consists of Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain.
