During his time in opposition, Sanchez a former economy professor strongly rejected spending cuts imposed by conservatives and promised to expand welfare rights.
Despite the criticism of austerity measures, Sanchez has expressed no scepticism on the EU monetary union.
He has also pledged to respect a recently negotiated national budget by Rajoy, avoiding fears of economic instability in the EU.
Sanchez first joined the PSOE in 1993 and worked as political adviser to the European Parliament and the UN during the war in Kosovo.
