Is it possible to treat all of us with contempt as human beings and thus transform politics into a real war? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

A short time ago, in this same feature, I supported those in favor of escaping from reality. I was driven by the inability to talk to anyone, without ending up talking about politics , especially Trump and Brexit, and the mysterious popularity of television programs and novels, who think they have something to say about the current “political climate”, when the ideal would clearly be to distance themselves from that climate.

You better read adventures or sentimental novels of the past. Not only is it unhealthy for us that politics is all over the place, but as philosopher Robert Tallisse puts it, it is unhealthy for politics itself. So? Have you followed my advice? I'm sure not. And to be honest, I didn't do it either. Apparently not even participants in a new study of neuropsykiatres Tali Sharot and her colleagues, on the disturbing phenomenon they called “The epistemic effects”.

The experiment was complex, but undisputed results: if we know someone's political ideas, we are no longer able to objectively judge his ability in sectors, which have nothing to do with politics. We are more inclined to listen to the advice of those who share our political ideas and to be influenced by them, even if it comes to dentist treatment, pension plans, expanding our kitchen, or anything else that has nothing to do with politics. Of course, it doesn't matter whether a dentist or a worker disagrees with us about Brex or Jeremy Corbin. Addressing an American public, researchers took the example of someone who discovers that his dermatologist is a Republican. To know a person's political tendencies should not condition your judgment on his ability in the medical field”. But that is not the case.

But wait a minute. Is it true we have to trust a Republican doctor? Part of me would like to answer yes. But another part cannot help but remember a study, from which it has turned out that most Republicans don't think climate change is man-made, and it's safer to have a gun at home. If they have swallowed up such foolishness, how would they have interpreted scientific records, and what beliefs should they have on other matters, such as skin tumors?
More generally, what I mean is that politics, after colonizing everything, has succeeded in colonizing our perception of facts. And if someone disagrees with me on climate change or weapons, maybe it's me who lies to myself, but it remains the problem we're talking about facts and not opinions. In this situation, it is not necessarily unlogical not to trust our political opponents for almost the rest of us.

It's a vicious circle: it would have been better if politics weren't so tribal, but seeing it's ʹ and it's already done for the most basic things maybe it's worth starting to behave tribally. After all, if the other side has lost touch with reality, if we want to have a reasonable relationship with reality, we must reject its entire vision of the world, not just its political ideas. Is it possible to treat all of us with contempt as human beings and thus transform politics into a real war? I imagine we'll find out soon enough. / The Guardian
