A man who defected from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) in 1983 was found in California.
Captain William Howard Hughes Jr has been signaled drawing $28,500 from his bank account to 19 different countries in New Mexico.
A man who claimed to be Barry O'Beirne was interviewed earlier this month by officials investigating false passports.
But after the verification, incompatibility was confirmed. So the man showed his real name was William Hughes.
He claimed he had been depressed during the time he was part of the Air Force so he left, creating a false identity.
Hughes had lived in California ever since.
Hughes is currently being held at Travis Air Base in California, a statement from the USAF office said.
He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, the removal of the reward, and unfair charges.
William worked at the Kirtland Air Force Test and Rating Center, New Mexico, and was exposed to classified information.
According to W SAF, its tasks included the classified “planning and analysis of NATO command systems, control and communication surveillance”.
At the time of his disappearance, he had just returned from the Netherlands, where he had worked with NATO officials.
Because of his access to classified information, he was declared a fugitive and was listed by the seven most wanted individuals of the U. SAF.
Officials have no information whether his family knew his whereabouts in advance.
