The transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into the Armed Forces, according to NATO, is an internal issue of Kosovo institutions.
In a response to Radio Free Europe, NATO has said it supports the development of the KSF within the mandate it has been created for this force.
The “Structure, mandate and mission of the Kosovo Security Force are not deployed by NATO. This is the internal issue of Kosovo institutions”, said in NATO's response from Brussels given Radio Free Europe.
“NATO supports the development of the KSF within its mandate. If the KSF's mandate changes, the North Atlantic Council would have to reconsider NATO's level of engagement”, it is stressed in response.
According to the Kosovo Constitution, the establishment of Armed Forces can only be done with constitutional changes, made by two-thirds of the Kosovo Parliament vote, including two-thirds of the vote by MPs representing minority committees in the Assembly.
This transformation has been radically opposed by representatives of the Serbian List, which has complicated the entire transformation process.
In 2017 Kosovo has taken an initiative to create the military only by law and without constitutional changes, but has faced fierce opposition from the US and NATO.
