The world on fire and flames. News from the Gaza Strip is a symbol of Donald Trump's risk of actions, says Ines Pohl, DW.
What makes this man celebrate the symbolic reopening of the American Embassy on the 70th anniversary of the expulsion of Palestinians from Israeli territories? Reopening a building, half of which is located in the territories of eastern Jerusalem? Where Palestinians would like to have their own government headquarters, in case two-state solution is reached. This is a diplomatic blow to the face of Palestinians, not justifying the escalation of violence. But who deliberately provokes, and does not take into account that this is an act that he says is also to blame. So Trump takes responsibility along with others for the slain and the wounded.
What drives this man?
What causes this man to break up with a signature atomic compromise with Iran, which has barely been reached, to tear it apart without previously agreeing with European partners and without discussing further steps with them? And that doesn't take into account further escalation of violence in the Middle East. And it causes in parallel a existential crisis in Europe and disrupts the peace order that rules for 70 years.
What moves this man to work hard to destroy what his predecessor has accomplished without a plan for what should follow the act of destruction? Donald Trump has never worked as democraticly elected politician before. He is not accustomed to this kind of business, which is done by giving and taking, by struggling to compromise, by weighing the damages and benefits, always considering the consequences of political activities and those not related to the day, but by a long time. Just look at his chosen symbols of power. He's climbing over everyone and he says: Look, I stand above all of you. And I can do whatever I want. And the impulse he acts with shows that for him the formula is not America first, but “Donald Trump first”.
This is not new. But these days this has been very dominant. Donald Trump has no plan B. He only thinks about his own action, not the consequences that will become sensitive after four or eight years. It does not matter to him how his actions and verbal attacks affect other countries outside America. He exercises his power because he can do so. Always thinking of drawing as much attention as possible. And he takes attention easier and easier when he destroys things by making noise. That's why exactly on such a day the American Embassy is moved. And that's why you break the deal with Iran, not knowing what happens next.
Wake up Germany and Europe!
For Germany and Europe this means that they must finally wake up from sleep: seven decades after the end of World War II, Europe needs to wake up from sleep. And part of this enlargement is to take responsibility for domestic and foreign policy. Germany must invest in its army. Although many have learned to live in a Germany where the army is partly prepared for protection. The Brits must, despite Brex, explain how they will co-operate with France and Germany in security and defence policies. And first of all, Europe has to find the way to stop breaking up on the inside and with a new heroic act to determine which community to live in the future.
These are big challenges and many uncertainties. But one thing is certain: To a country that runs as Donald Trump, you can't trust it anymore. The images coming from the Gaza Strip these days are sad evidence of the existential necessity of this.
