The girl named Aurora was the subject of extensive research after leaving her home in Queensland and had not returned, writes Periscope. She's been followed by her 17-year-old dog, Max, who is partly blind and deaf.
The dog stood by the girl for 16 hours before her relatives found her on a hilltop Sunday morning. Aurora's mother, Leisa Marie Bennett, said that she had heard the girl call from her location, about two miles from home.
I climbed up the mountain, and when I reached the top, the dog came to me and sent me to her”, the girl's mother told me about Australian media.
Relatives have said that Aurora was sheltered under a rock with the dog when temperatures had dropped to 15 degrees Fahrenheit [15 ° C]. The three-year-old girl has only received a few light scratches as far as she was missing.
More than 100 emergency services and volunteers have participated in the girl's research in Queensland.
Police have praised Max's move, and named him an honorary police dog, writes Periscope.
I can imagine how scared the girl was during the cold night. The dog was a good friend to the kid and kept him warm. It's a positive score”, police inspector Craig Berry said.
Why So Loyal?
According to Sydney University professor Paul McGreevy, who legalizes animal behavior, old dogs value contact with people, saying this might have been one of the reasons Max stayed with the girl.
He said the dog might have noticed the girl's concern.
“If the girl has cried, it is likely that the dog has responded with comfort to her. Being with him must have been a primary one for him, Professor McGreevy told the BBC. /Periscopi/
