Albania's prime minister, Edi Rama, has been guest of honour at the Question and Answer session, ahead of 18 thousand members of the Israeli-American Committee of Public Affairs Annual Conference in the United States.
In a 10-minute presentation, Rama has summed up the Albanian-Israel report for centuries, stressing the heroism of Albanians in World War II when they defended Jews and did not hand them over to the Nazis.
As the number of Jews during World War II decreased in other European countries, it grew in Albania.
Rama has even indicated that this was not the only case of the Jews ' arrival in Albania, they had sought Albanian hospitality three times before and had found it in the first century, in the fifteenth and in the seventeenth.
“Albania was the first country in Europe to recognise the right of the Jewish community to be legalised. History is remarkable, for the Jews were saved not only by Muslim families but also by Catholic clergy”, Rama has declared.
The story of one of the highest Christian clerics in Albania, who baptized many Jews to change their identities and to be saved by the Nazis”, is very famous.
“Also is a very popular story when one of the highest Nazis, Hermann Neubacher, in 1943 called the four representatives of our four religious communities and asked them to give the list of Jews and their list of gold they gave the gold list, but not the list of the Jews”.
It's really extraordinary how no Jew was handed over to the Germans”.
Rama has asked the Israelites to visit Albania again, but now on vacation and tourism.
