Former French President Nicolas Sarcozy has been detained for questioning his financing in the election campaign, leading European media report on recent news.
The media say the news was delivered by judicial sources. According to Le Monde, the court is investigating alleged Libyan financing in the 2007 Sarkozy election campaign.
A Reuters court source says Sarkozy is being questioned by police in connection with an investigation into irregularities in funding the election campaign.
The newspaper Le Monde writes that this is the first time Sarcozy has been questioned about an investigation that opened in April 2013.
It can be held up to 48 hours in police and will be submitted to the Magic Court for an act immediately if police mount investigations.
Sarcozy served as president of France from 2007 to 2012. He tried to make a comeback in the 2017 elections, but failed to persuade voters in his party to support him.
