Russia's “Military Intelligence, in co-operation with Turkish colleagues, has brought back to Russia the lifeless body of the pilot Major Roman Filipov, who heroicly died in Syria on February 3rd”, the Ministry's report reported.
The funeral, organised by the army for Filipov, will take place in his hometown of Voronez on February 8th, according to his family's wishes, the ministry has said.
Airplane “SU-25”, led by Filipov, was ousted by terrorist militants in the Syrian province of Ibleid on Saturday during a routine flight. He was allegedly shot by a missile that follows objects based on thermal energy. The exact number of ammunition used in this attack is still unknown, since the crash site still remains under the control of militants.
The Russian Defence Ministry has stressed that the country is controlled by terrorists from the Al-Nusra Front.
Major Filipov had managed to keep the plane in the air enough to report it was hit, but later he had been forced to land on the territory occupied by militants.
Shortly after landing on earth, terrorists attacked Filipov, engaging in armed conflict. Severely wounded and surrounded by terrorists, Filipov had seen no choice but to detonate a grenade and kill himself. It is reported that before his death he had called “this is for the boys!” So, at least, it's understood based on a video showing the last moments of his life.
After his death, 34-year-old has been honoured with Russia's “Hero”, which is the highest price in Russia. The Russian pilot has left his wife and daughter behind. /Periscopi/
