In his comment, Mattis said Moscow has tried to intervene in last month's Congress elections.
We are facing someone we cannot trust”, Mattis said during his speech. “There is no doubt that relations have deteriorated”, he added.
Mattis also discussed curbing confrontation with Russia in the future.
This is a very complex situation because Mr. Putin seems to learn very slowly. He is not realizing that he is harming his people and is not acting in line with Russian interests, and is forcing NATO to re-arm. ”, Mattis said.
The defence secretary also mentioned the 1987 Treaty known as the INF, which Washington accuses Moscow of wrongdoing.
Moscow had denied charges of violating the Treaty. Mattis did not mention whether President Donald Trump will withdraw from the treaty. (REL)
