When you finish reading this scripture, at least six people will kill themselves in this world.

Those six people make up an extremely small piece of 800 thousand people who will kill themselves this year more than Washington DC's population, Oslo or Cape Town [s.i.i. translators: or half the population of Kosovo]. Sometimes it happens that even famous and famous people like Anthony Bourdain or Kate Spade do something like that, and that fills their forehead, but they too are someone's children, friends, or colleagues, worthy members of families and communities.

Suicide is the most extreme and evident symptoms of a much larger mental emergency that we have so far failed to address properly. Stigma, fear and lack of understanding are the suffering of those who are infected and prevent serious actions that are so desperately needed.

One of four of us has to face some sort of mental illness at some point in his life, and if we're not directly infected, someone he makes us think is very likely to be affected. Our young people are especially vulnerable, with suicide being the second biggest cause of death worldwide between the ages of 15 and 29 and half of all mental illness since the age of 14.

And yet, despite the universality of the matter, we find it hard to speak out or offer adequate attention. Within families and communities, we are often overwhelmed by shame that tells us that those with mental illness are somewhat less valuable or are guilty of their suffering.

Instead of treating those who deal with mental illness kindly, like those who have physical illnesses, we actually blame and punish them for that. In many countries, auxiliary services are incompatible, and those with treatable diseases have been criminalised, literally bound by bonds for inhumane conditions, cut off from the rest of society without hope.

Mental health currently gets less than 1 percent of global financial assistance. Internal finances in prevention, promotion and treatment are similarly low. Currently, each nation in the world is “in development” on this issue.

Such a small investment is not only bad for individuals, it is destructive for communities and entire economies. Mental illness costs the world 2.5 trillion dollars a year - a figure expected to increase to 6 trillion by 2030 if we do nothing.

We cannot afford the stigma to silence us, or stop from the bad ideas that portray these diseases as a cause of moral weakness or failure. Research indicates that there is a fourfold return for every dollar spent on depression and anguish.

The meal has come for all of us, collectively, to face the causes and symptoms of mental illness, and to provide care for those who suffer from it. You don't have to be an international artist or head of the World Health Organization. [ Footnote] O BSH to make any difference.

All of us can help communities to understand, respect, and prioritize mental health. All of us can learn how to help loved ones through difficult times. And all of us can become part of a new movement including the people who have faced these very challenges to call governments and industries to put them on top of their agendas.

Since 2013, WHO has worked with various countries to implement a global operating plan in matters of mental health. Earlier this year, WHO released the Atlas of Mental Health Global, which offers data from 177 countries in progress on achieving the goals of the plan.

We've got different ways of life. But we have all seen how political leadership, financing, innovation and individual acts of bravery and kindly can change the world. It is time to do the same for our mental health. /The Guardian/Periscope
