Several Turkish sources told the news agency, Reuters, on Saturday that they believed Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, describing as the alleged “assassination”.
An unidentified source within the consulate has told the official Saudi press agency that the charges were groundless and denied allegations of deliberate murder.
Khashoggi was a key critic of the Saudi government's reform programme under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who lived in the US for more than a year.
