White House National Security Adviser John Bolton named Iran “the central banker of international terrorism”, until he presented a broad strategy against Tehran in the Middle East.
Bolton said the United States strategy would use both military and non-military means to repel Iranian-backed militants and their financial supporters.
“Islamic terrorist groups pose a major threat to the United States and their interests abroad”, Bolton told reporters.
Iran, he said, is the “central banker of international terrorism since 1979”.
United States President Donald Trump, since taking office in January 2017, has taken an aggressive approach to Iran.
In addition, it has withdrawn from a nuclear landmark agreement between the Islamic Republic and six world powers and has restored sanctions on Iran's economy.
Next month, the Trump administration plans to impose new sanctions on Iran's oil sector, with the aim of preventing its involvement in conflicts in Syria and Iraq and force it to engage in new negotiations for the ballistic missile programme.
