Russia must immediately halt the secret development of a banned nuclear system “cruise”, instead the United States will try to destroy it before becoming operational. This is Washington's NATO envoy's warning this Tuesday.
The United States believes Russia is developing a land launching system in full violation of the Cold War-era treaty, which could thus allow Moscow to launch a nuclear attack on Europe soon after the order is issued. Yet, Moscow has repeatedly denied such wrongdoing.
US Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said Washington remains committed to a diplomatic solution, but is also prepared to consider a military attack if the development of the medium-range missile system continues.
“at this point, we would focus on our capacities to eliminate a Russian missile that could hit any of our alliance countries”, Hutchison said at a news conference. “Conversions from the United States may be such as to eliminate the developing missiles from Russia in violation of the treaty. They have already been notified”, she added further.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted immediately, saying such statements were extremely dangerous and that it would offer Washington detailed answers later.
It seems that people who make such statements fail to understand their level of responsibility and the danger of an aggressive rhetoric” were quoted as saying by spokeswoman Maria Zakharova of the news agency “TASS”
In the past, the Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed readiness for talks with the United States, in an effort to keep the treaty in force, and that it will continue to meet obligations stemming from it, if America does the same, follows the TCh.
Comments by Hutchison, who has been appointed to NATO post by President Trump, constitutes the most direct warning of a preventative attack since an American official said in 2017 that the US could consider creating its own systems, if Russia continues to violate the 1987 middle-range nuclear missile Treaty. That treaty prohibits medium missiles, capable of hitting Europe or Alaska. The United States and Russia celebrated its 30th anniversary in Geneva during the past year.
