The number of Albanians who have been equipped with permission to stay in EU countries in the last 10 years is estimated to be 19.5% of Albania's current population, given Eurostat's data on residence permits, I NSTAT for the population.
According to Eurostat data, most residence permits have been issued for family reasons. Albania has scored record for the number of residence permits compared with other Balkan countries, where Albanian citizens have led for their number since 2008.
The record of residence permits issued for the first time in 10 years was marked in 2008, where, according to Eurostat, nearly 100,000 Albanians were granted residence permits. The number of permits then entered the drop trend, where in 2013 it seized the lowest level of 31 thousand applications, but holding the record compared to the Western Balkan countries.
After 2013 the number of residence permits increased again, from 2014 to 2017, some 200 thousand Albanians were equipped with residence permits for the first time. This coincides with the new migration wave, where asylum applications reached over 60 thousand in 2015.
In 2017, the number of residence permits issued to Albanians from EU countries was 51 thousand and 600, with about 29 thousand given for family reasons, about 2,000 for schooling and 5 thousand for work.
After Albania, for the highest number of residence permits issued is Serbia, where about 400,000 of its citizens were provided for the first time with permission from EU countries. Unlike Albanian citizens, the majority of Serbs have received residence permits for employment reasons, about 17 thousand, 13 thousand for family reasons and 2400 for schooling reasons.
In third place, the highest number of residence permits ranks Kosovo, where according to data on Eurostat databases only during 2017 have been obtained about 26 thousand new residence permits, most of which have been issued for family reasons.
While Macedonians were issued about 16,000 residence permits from EU countries, the permits for family reasons prevailed here as well. In the region, the lowest number of residence permits is Montenegro, where, according to Eurostat, more than 2,500 citizens were provided.
