A Muslim has decided to challenge Vladimir Putin for the post of president of Russia, international media write.

Ayna Gamzatova, a successful journalist and chief of a large media group, has submitted her application to the Election Commission on Monday. It was nominated for this race by a local organisation based in Daguestan, the federal republic within Russia, where over 80 per cent of the population is Muslim, broadcast newspapers.

Gamzatova is Daguestan's chief mufti wife. If her candidacy is approved, Gamzatova will become the first Muslim woman to run for Russia's chairman.

It hopes to receive the support of Russia's Muslims, which make up about 7 per cent of the population, or about 10 million people.

The presidential elections in Russia will be held in March, while Putin has already published the candidacy for re-election in the post.
