Saudi Arabia's Attorney General today has confirmed that 11 princes from the Saudi royal family have been arrested, due to the protest against austerity measures in this country.
The attorney general, Saud al-Mojeb, said 11 princes will face trial on charges that “has upset peace and public order”.
The princes were arrested after being gathered near a historic palace in the capital, Riyadh, to protest the government's decision that the royal family must now pay electricity and water bills.
“Although informed that their demands were not legal, the 11 princes have refused to leave space, disrupting public order and peace”, prosecutor Mojeb said.
The detainees are being held in prison, Al-Hayer, with high security, south of Riyadh.
Over the past two years, the government of Saudi Arabia has implemented a string of savings measures for increased revenues and reduced spending, due to the global decline in oil prices, which has caused large deficits in the budget.
