The selection of Catalonia in the heart of Europe

Beyond the Catalan referendum and manifestation in Barcelona, the problem is that European states are weakening faster than the European Union is strengthening, and this creates a disturbing vacuum.

United Europe does not encourage separatisms, but the European Union -- and the power that its institutions, its rules and its policies have over the states that make up it -- offers an ideal framework for the rebirth of forgotten nations

Barcelona, Catalan, municipal police do not offer the same figures as Prefecture, which represents the Spanish state. There were a million demonstrators for the police. There were 350 grand for the Prefecture, but the fact remains that many people expressed their support for Catalan independence on September 11th in Barcelona.

“We still do not know whether the referendum will be held because the Spanish government opposes its organisation and has the means to impose its will.

Even if the vote was to take place, it is not necessarily the Catalans will choose a divorce because according to what polls say 49 percent would vote No, and 41 percent Y. The Catalan indifference, however, is very strong in the region.

The first reason for this phenomenon is that Catalonia was an independent country before becoming Spanish and remains a more modern, industrial, rich and European nation than the rest of Spain. Catalon provides 20 percent of the gross domestic product, while 7.5 million Catalans make up 17 percent of the population.

Large as Belgium, Catalonia feels capable of flying with her wings. The second reason for the power of this indifference is the presence of the European Union. United Europe does not encourage separatisms, but the European Union -- and the power that its institutions, its rules and policies have over the states that make up it -- provides an ideal framework for the rebirth of forgotten nations.

It is worth this, as with Scotland, Flanders, Belgium, Corsica, France, and to a lesser extent northern Italy, which has invented a national identity to justify just a desire not to share its wealth with less developed regions.

Out of regional selfishness, in reaffirming a culture of its own, Indian aspirations feed on Europe for various causes, which they need to strengthen their desire to stay within the EU, or to share with the European project. We don't know whether Great Britain will melt, but sure enough is that Brex clearly weakens its constituent units, to the extent that Scotland, like London, doesn't want to know about this coexistence.
