The head of the republican majority in the Senate on Sunday dismissed the possibility that the government could close this coming week when the funds are stopped.
The government will not cease to function “It won't happen”, Senator Mitch McConnell told ABC television.
Congress faces a deadline Friday to adopt the budget for functioning of the government by the end of September.
But lawmakers can approve a temporary spending plan for two weeks or longer, until January, pending further budget negotiations between republican lawmakers and Democrats, which often have opposing views on programmes that the government should finance and on what amounts. / VoA
