A former Croatian soldier, Azra Basic, was sentenced today by a Sarajevo court to 14 years in prison for war crimes -- the worst sentence convicted against a woman for crimes committed during the 1990s Bosnian conflict.
Azra Basic, 58, was extradited to Bosnia at the end of 2016 from the US, where he emigrated after the Bosnian intercommunist conflict (1992-95, 100,000 dead).
She was arrested in 2011 at the request of Bosnian justice.
Judged since January, it was found guilty of crimes against Serb civilians detained in April 1992 in the region of the city of Derventa.
Described by several witnesses as the master of life and death” at the time of events, Azra Basic was found guilty of killing the detainees, Blagoje Dyras.
“While he was kneeling and held by two other detainees after he was killed, “Azara Basic had approached Blagoje Djuras, with a knife in his hand, which he had stuck to his neck”, the judge points out.
