The Syrian Army declared on Thursday the victory over the Islamic State, saying that taking the last city, which was under the control of jihadists, marks the collapse of their project in the region.
The army and its allies are still fighting against the Islamic State in areas near Albu Kamal, the last city the militant group had held in Syria, near the border with Iraq, the military said.
But the retake of the city brings to an end the Islamic State era and territorial rule over the so-called Californias declared in 2014 in Iraq and Syria, during which millions of people suffered under its severe and oppressive restrictions, Kosovo Press broadcasts.
“In Albu Kamal, jihadists had fought hard,”, said a commander in the pro-Syrian military alliance.
