At the end of the first day of the summit with European Union leaders in Brussels. German Chancellor Angela Merkel struck an optimistic tone about the future of a Brex agreement between the EU and Britain, reports “Deutsche Welle”, Periscopi broadcast.
“I have no doubt that if we're all focused... we can achieve a good score”, she told reporters at a press conference after midnight Friday.
“I want a very clear agreement and not a unpredictable” solution, Merkel said, adding: “We are working hard on this intensively. ”
The German leader stressed that progress has been made in negotiations on Britain's divorce from the bloc, saying: “irrespective of what the British press said, this is a process that is moving step by step”.
British Prime Minister Theresa May's statement during a meeting dinner, however, failed to influence Merkel's opinion that trade talks will remain outside the table until at least December.
The Chancellor said she was committed to maintaining the good “ ” of negotiations, but the lack of detailed proposals from the British side showed that Mayt's efforts were still “not enough”.
EU leaders agree to lower Turkey's funds
Merkel also told reporters that EU leaders demanded from the bloc's executive arm to investigate cutting financial aid before membership in Turkey in a <x0 responsible” way.
“We asked the Commission to provide recommendations for the change and reduction of pre-accession assistance”, Merkel said.
The German leader stressed that even though there was a “that was absolutely disappointing for human rights” in Turkey, she wanted to continue talks and “to avoid a” confrontation with Ankara.
She also praised Turkey for its work with refugees and helped prevent the flow of migrants to Europe as part of an agreement with the EU.
Merkel noted there is no consensus among EU leaders if it will complete membership talks with Turkey fully. /Periscopi/
