The victims' neighbours have remained shocked by yesterday's event, where most were awakened by automatic gun shooting.
At first, they thought any thief might have entered one of them's apartment. So thought Nefo Kadana, neighbor to the Costa couple. She was still shocked yesterday by the event, while, as it were expressed, no one had thought that they could reach their differences so far.
According to her, both sides were quiet families and were not known as neighborhood problems. Residents say the latest murder in “The liquefied Sock” is unprecedented in Gjirokastra.
Mrs. Kadana, you're a neighbor to the victims and author. When did this happen?
Somewhere around 7:00, because I usually get up early before seven hours. She's been bleeding since morning. I thought thieves had come in, and someone fired a gun to scare them, but then I found out who they were, I got sorry.
What did you hear?
I heard gunshots scaring me. I was so scared, more so than I could scream. You won't believe it, but even the sound of bullets drilling the body was heard as if I had them here in my room. I never thought there'd be a murder in this mess of ours, never ever... We have never experienced such events; we are not used to them. God, I never put any death on those two.
After the shots and screams you heard, what did you see next?
I went out to the window here to look out, but I didn't see anything but screaming, and then the police and ambulances came in with a loud bang. It was there that I learned that something had happened, but I thought it might be the thieves who had come to rob a house. A little later, I learned what had happened and was shocked. I was so shocked that my whole body trembles even as we speak. I never put to death those two, and I was also very surprised at Apostol, because we lived here a lifetime and didn't hear of shit.
How did you know the victim, Aleko?
He was born here and he grew up here. What can I say? He was a good man, he watched his own business, his own troubles, he never messed with anyone. He was also very educated. Very good people like his mother and father were. And I knew a little about the young woman, that she didn't have much to do with me, but that she too was talkative, every time they exchanged or passed here in front of my door going home.
What kind of person did you know Apostol?
He too was a good man, and he was not confused with anyone. They were good family, wife, and good children who never felt. I don't know how this disaster happened, but I still find it amazing. Very tragic.
Have you heard of the conflicts between them?
I wasn't interested in asking directly from poor Leko or Apostol, but since we had heard, it was about a fence separating houses from each other. Apostol built the wall with his own money, and as I had heard, this wall served Lekos too because he could neither catch his appearance nor pose any danger. As far as I heard, they were in court, and I don't know how it ended. In any case, he made a mistake in doing so and took two lives.
