Fire southwest of France, more than 10,000 inhabitants evacuate

A major fire spreading uncontrolled to southwest France has forced the evacuation of over 10,000 people from about two dozen small towns and villages near the border with Spain, while authorities have warned that Monday's strong winds are expected to exacerbate the situation.
The European Union has announced that it is sending four jets to extinguish fires from Cyprus and Sweden to help firefighters in the area near the town of Perpignan. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on the X platform that “Europe stands with France”.
The fire has burned about 4 thousand and 600 hectares in the hilly areas of the French Pyrenees, local mayor Pierre Regnacul de la Mothe, Reuters writes, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
Meanwhile, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has warned of worsening conditions.
This morning, conditions are getting worse. Today the battle resumes”, he has declared TF1 television.
