A new form of VAR will come this edition into one of the European leagues

WAR technology has already spread to many major championships worldwide, but it continues to divide public opinion and cause numerous debates about how it applies.

WAR is used in many of the major European leagues, but it is now confirmed that the Wales Football Federation will present a new version of it in Novira Cymru Premier, the highest football level in Wales.

Season 2026/27 will bring “to use WAR Light”, described as a simplified “complete VAR version used in league and other competitions worldwide”.

The goal remains the same: correcting clear and clear mistakes, as well as incidents the main judge has not seen in the first moment.

As in the standard system, VAR officials will be present in a control room for each match.

The main difference, however, is that VAR Light only functions with four main cameras ʹ two placed on the midfield line and one near each penalty area.

“WAR Light” can only be used for five main game situations:

Goals and cancelled goals.

Incidents within the penalty area.

Red cards live.

The second yellow cards given incorrectly.

Cases of the wrong identity of the punished player.

The system will not interfere with the yellow cartons unless there is a possibility that punishment will be turned into a red card.

Also, graphic lines for offline positions in close cases will not be used. The intervention will only take place when the outside position is clearly visible.

The same is true of line technology, which cannot be used when the decision is very narrow.

Also, incidents that cannot be clearly identified by available angles of cameras will not undergo revision.

Wells Football Federation explained why “presentation WAR Light”:

It's important to note that the VAR Light does not exist to retrial the match. THE VAR can only make recommendations, while the final decision is always taken by the judge in the field after reviewing the incident on the monitor near the sideline.

The only moments when the VAR won't send the judge to the monitor are the ones where the decision is simply actual, such as whether the intervention occurred inside or outside the penalty area, or whether a player is in a dead end or not.”

The Federation also published an explanatory video to visually show how the VAR Light will function.

The Wells elite championship, attended by 16 teams, begins on Friday, July 31st, with the first matches of the season.

The defending champion is The New Saints, who has won the title for four successive seasons, starting in the 2021/22 season.

Former Rochdale and Stockport County spokesperson Yordan Williams was last season's top scorer with 26 goals for champions, helping them qualify first in the first round of the Champions League.

However, the overall loss to Sabah caused The New Saints to continue the competition in the qualifying round of the League of Conference.
