(3 hours ago)English actor Anthony Taylor has decided to end his career after two decades in football fields.
The 47-year-old has confirmed retirement from professional arbitration after completing his commitments at the 2026 World Cup, closing his career with 831 matches run over 20 years.
Taylor led the last match on July 6, 2026, in Spain's 1:0 victory over Portugal in the 1/8th phase of the World Final.
“Arbitration at elite level has been a great privilege, but the pressure is extraordinary and attention is always present. Now is the right time to leave and move to the next chapter of my career”, Taylor said.
During his career, the English referee has led big matches, including the 2015 English League Cup final and the European League final in 1923.
He was also praised for his quick reaction to the DenmarkFinland match in 2020, when Christian Ericksen suffered a crash in the field.
However, Taylor has also faced controversy, especially after the 2023 European League final between Seville and Rome, when coach José Mourinho sharply criticised him after the match.
Taylor has described that incident as the most serious case of abuse he has experienced during his career.
